On Friday a Mumbai court in India said that the Bollywood actor Salman Khan would be allowed bail until it hears his appeal of his conviction in a drunken-driving hit-and-run case.
On Wednesday Salman Khan was sentenced to five years in prison for killing one out of 5 homeless men who were sleeping on the streets. During the Trial Salman Khan said he was not behind the wheel when this happened but his driver said other wise. After the hearing the Mumbai court suspended the sentence and was asked to pay bail of 30,000 rupees, or about $500. The court will continue his hearing in July.
Supporters of the actor, one of the country’s most celebrated, rejoiced outside his Mumbai home after hearing that he would not be immediately imprisoned. One distraught fan consumed poison outside the court while waiting for the news but was taken to the hospital and survived, according to the Press Trust of India.
