Speaking in Moscow on Saturday South African President Jacob Zuma said that the time has come for Africa to be included as one of the permanent members at United Nations (UN) Security Council.
on Saturday at the 70th Commemoration of Russia (formerly Union of Soviet Socialist Republic ‘USSR’)’s victory over the Nazi Germany during the destructive World War II, Zuma said
“The time has come, therefore, for the world to seriously reflect on this exclusion of Africa yet again, 70 years on, and seriously discuss the question of the meaningful reform of the UN Security Council, as we commemorate the contribution of Africa to the war against fascism,” Zuma said.
The South African president said his country also contributed in the Second World War II in the fight against fascism.
According to CAJ news He said the transformation of the UN Security Council should reflect the global representation as opposed to only five permanent members making decisions on behalf of the entire world.
Earlier, Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, who is also both the AU and Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairman had challenged the UN to transform with immediate effect.
“This is an important occasion as it marks a significant period in the history of the world, the defeat of fascism and Nazism,” Zuma said.
Both South Africa and Nigeria eye the top UN security council position as African representatives.
Presently, the UN security council had five members comprising the United States (USA), Russia, Britain, France and Germany CAJ News Reports.
