Chelsea discuss with Willian on the benefits of home support ahead of sundays march
Any die hard Chelsea fan in the bulding? get in hear and read what your club is expecting ahead of the sunday game.
Chelsea FC reports:
Ahead of Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace, the official Chelsea website sat down with Willian, who discussed the benefits of home support, personal form and being able to adapt.
As the Blues close in on what would be a first Barclays Premier League title in five years, Sunday has the potential to go down as a day which lives long in the memory of all connected with the club.....
Victory in our home game against Crystal Palace would ensure we cannot be caught by the chasing pack, and Willian, a regular in the side since the start of the season, is confident that with a passionate home crowd cheering us on, we can overcome Alan Pardew’s side and make it an afternoon to remember for the Chelsea faithful.
‘I think everyone is happy right now, it’s a beautiful moment for us and hopefully on Sunday we can confirm the title,’ says the Brazilian. ‘We need to put in a good performance and play in the same way as we have been throughout the season.
‘We are playing at home, we have the support of the fans behind us and we have a great chance to win the game. The fans are very important, we need them to come to the game and support the team. It gives us added motivation.
‘Sometimes you have to forget about the supporters and get on with your job out on the pitch but, of course, Sunday is a day when they can be a very big help for us.’
It was Wednesday’s 3-1 win at Leicester which left us on the brink of adding a second trophy of the season to our ever-expanding cabinet, a game in which Willian was named man of the match due to a hugely energetic display, with his direct running and ability on the ball causing the home side all manner of problems.
‘I was pleased with the performance of myself and the whole team,’ he reflects. ‘It was a difficult game, everybody gave their best and we were very happy with the result.
‘The first half was tough for us but in the second half we played much better and scored three goals, in the end I felt we deserved to win the game.’
Willian started at the King Power Stadium operating as the central player in the supporting attacking trio behind lone striker Didier Drogba, but in the second half, with the Blues trailing at the break, he shifted out wide, allowing Cesc Fabregas to move into a more advanced position.
‘Sometimes when the way you are playing isn’t working you have to change it,’ he explains. ‘The manager did that at half-time and it paid off.
‘In the second half we had a lot more possession and played with confidence. Because of that we created more chances, which enabled us to score the three goals.’
Of course, more often than not, since moving to Stamford Bridge in August 2013, Willian has played wide on the right, but there have been occasions when he has been deployed in the ‘number 10’ position.
‘I don’t think there is a big difference between the two positions but when you play through the middle there is less space to try to affect the game,’ he says.
‘When you play on the wing there is more room but, often, when I start the game out wide I come inside as well. Myself, Eden, Oscar and Cesc always try to move and change position because it helps us and makes it more difficult for the defenders to mark you.’
In part two of our exclusive interview with Willian, which you can read later this weekend, he reflects on past title triumphs and assesses the spirit within the Chelsea squad.
